What actions you need to take...
General approach | Specific actions

General approach

As a teacher you have diverse responsibilities and many calls on your time. We understand that copyright is not necessarily on the top of your agenda, and that you don’t want to add “legal eagle” to an ever-expanding skill set.

However as a school teacher your professional responsibilities include:

  • having a working knowledge of the Copyright Act 1968, and the licence arrangements that your education department has with a number of collecting societies such as Copyright Agency Ltd, (CAL);
  • being individually responsible for compliance with the Copyright Act 1968; and
  • ensuring that relevant documentation (for the CAL Survey) is completed in appropriate detail.

You are also instrumental in:

  • building a school culture that values and respects intellectual endeavour and honours the access privileges accorded to the education sector; and
  • modelling responsible information practices to students as the new generation of knowledge workers.

The classroom is the focus of copyright obligations for you as a knowledge professional; both in terms of what copyrighted materials you make available to students and how you make them available. Another significant aspect of your role is the information usage practices and values you pass on to your students.

Specific actions

Education
Appraise your own and any of your staff’s knowledge of copyright issues through the Copyright Awareness test included in the resource pack.

Familiarise yourself with the major changes in copyright law and its implementation by reading material provided on this website and by following through any relevant links to other resources.

If you supervise other staff you should provide them with information and training on the changes to copyright law. You can do this by:

  • pointing them to material on this website;
  • downloading and distributing the information on changes to copyright law;
  • using the Copyright Presentation included in the resource pack as a basis for a training session; and/or
  • requesting a more specific professional development or resourcing from your education department or authority.

Building a Culture of Responsible Information Use
As a teacher you can foster a culture of responsible information use through:

  • using the Copyright Aware posters and screen savers to kickstart awareness raising on this issue;
  • promoting the Copyright Aware website to your colleagues and students;
  • using and displaying the Knowing the Limits poster, included in the resource pack; and
  • including issues on copyright and intellectual property in your teaching and learning activities.

Hardcopy Licence
As a teacher you need to:

  • know how the Hardcopy Agreement between the schools sector and CAL operates; and
  • make smart decisions about the type and format of copyrighted materials that you reproduce or communicate under the statutory provision of the Act that fall into the category of hardcopy materials.

Moral Rights
As a teacher you need to:

  • make sure that you attribute authorship of any copyright material you use in classroom teaching; and
  • make sure that your students mirror this and also attribute the authorship of any copyright material they use in their schoolwork.

Digital materials and the Electronic Reproduction and Communication Licence
As a teacher you need to:

  • familiarise yourself with this new area of copyright law;
  • be aware of some of the “grey areas” in relation to calculating the limits associated with the electronic usage scheme; and
  • understand the distinctions between copyright licensing regimes and know how to make best use of the available educational exemptions. Refer to content on this website, further resources and also the Quickcopy Reference Tool we supply.
